This figure and two similar ones in The Courtauld Gallery's collection (D.1958.PD.72 and D.1958.PD.73) were originally thought to be horizontal swimmers. Photographs of the decorations in their original location, however, reveal their vertical orientation on panels of interior shutters. The dynamic poses and athletic build of the figures suggests they are dancers. Grant was enthralled by the radical new style of movement performed by the Russian ballet company, the Ballets Russes, who frequently appeared in London at this time, and who feature in a number of his compositions.
