The closely-observed detail in these two drawings suggest that they are studies from life, to be used possibly as models for a market scene. Although none of the people or animals directly matches any in Callot's prints, a man butchering appears in scenes of war such as 'The Siege of Breda' (1628), in which mercenaries and camp followers feature. Both studies may belong to the period 1612-1621, when Callot was in Florence, largely engaged in making etchings recording the dramatic pageants staged by the Medici rulers of the city.
Notes
This and D.1952.RW.434 appear to be from the same sketchbook, from which other drawings are in the Royal Collection at Windsor (nos 26-31 in Blunt, 'French Drawings at Windsor Castle', 1945), probably made in Florence 1617-19.

Gilbert Paignon-Dijonval (1708-1792); Thomas Dimsdale, London (1758-1823), L.2426; William Amhurst Tyssen-Amherst, 1st Baron Amherst of Hackney (1835-1909); by descent to his wife, Margaret Susan Mitford (1835-1919); her estate sale, Sotheby's (London), 14 December 1921, lot 52 (with D.1952.RW.434); purchased there by Sir Robert Witt, London (1872-1952) (14 shillings); Witt Bequest 1952
