The Zwinger, a masterpiece of the baroque aesthetic begun in 1709, was built for Augustus the Strong of Saxony as an outdoor theatre for royal entertainments. Prout visited Dresden on the way back from a trip to Prague via Brunswick, Bohemia and Saxony in the summer of 1829. Two watercolours, an etching (in 'The Keepsake' of 1828-1833) and a lithograph were subsequently derived from this drawing. The hooked lines which are characteristic of his style, and derive ultimately from the work of Canaletto, are particularly effective in conveying the complex architecture.
