These so-called 'Monro School' wash drawings are quite distinctive, their blue and grey palette inspired to a large extent by the muted hues of J.R. Cozens and Edward Dayes. A series of 'outlines' of the harbour at Dover by Dr Monro's neighbour, John Henderson, were jointly copied by Turner and Girtin, and it has been suggested that the present drawing might also be a combined effort. Turner here uses wash tones as an expression of light rather than purely as a means of rendering forms.
