Brilliant in their swift execution and at the same time powerful and nuanced in expression, these sketches of angels (the other is D.1952.RW.175) come from a single sheet cut apart at some point in its history. Reflecting the popular subject of the mighty guardian angel who leads the Christian soul disguised as a child, the studies present two variations on the theme: one angel points dramatically skyward, indicating the ‘true way’ towards heaven; the other is more modest and reflective.

Provenance

Sir William Stirling Maxwell, London (1818-1878); by descent to his son, Sir John Stirling Maxwell, Glasgow (1866-1956); his sale, Sotheby's (London), 15 - 16 February 1921, lot 249; presumably purchased there by E. Parsons & Sons (London); their sale, cat. 38, 1921, lot 405 (with D.1952.RW.173 and 175, as by Francisco Rizi); purchased there by Sir Robert Witt (1875-1952) (£1.35); Witt Bequest 1952
