Like Edgar Dégas (1834-1917), whose work he much admired, Maillol sought to depict the female body in the simplest, most natural postures, often bending or crouching. Mainly concerned with the torso, especially the curvaceous back view, he minimalised gestures and facial features. This drawing, probably of his wife Clothilde, is one of two known studies for a lithograph. The delicately shaded contours are created by using a soft pencil over textured paper.
