During the 1960s King emerged as one of the leading figures of the celebrated ‘New Generation’ group of British sculptors. This is one of the first works in which he explored a radical abstract language of sculpture whilst retaining strong links to organic form. The leaning block of painted plaster prompts association with prehistoric standing stones, reflecting King’s interest in the early origins of sculpture. This bulbous ‘pregnant’ form also conveys themes of maternity and gives the work an imposing figurative quality.
