This work belongs to a group of a dozen different ‘dance movements’ created by Rodin in the last years of his life when he was too frail to work on a large scale. The series expresses the extreme physicality of the modern dancer and are among Rodin’s most innovative sculptures. They were unknown to the public until the Musée Rodin cast them in bronze, decades after the artist’s death. All four Rodin bronzes in the Gallery’s collection were purchased directly from the Musée Rodin by the art dealer and former ballet dancer Lillian Browse (1906-2005) and bequeathed to the Gallery in 2006.
