This sculptor may not have been Florentine but he was certainly acquainted with the design of a relief by the Florentine artist, Verrochio, now lost, but sufficiently popular to survive in several versions.
Small bands of cloud drift behind the Virgin with her fluttering veil, leaving no part of the surface without decorative detail. Traces of purple pigment on the relief may be original.
