Saint Roch (or Rocco) was venerated in Venice, Tiepolo’s native city, as a protector against the plague. He wears a pilgrim’s shell on his chest and has a plague sore on his thigh. Beside him is the dog that helped him recover by licking his wound.
This painting was probably made for a member of the Scuola di San Rocco, a Venetian confraternity dedicated to the saint. Despite its small scale, the painting’s high finish indicates that it is not an oil sketch but a completed work, unlike the other works by Tiepolo nearby.
