The Virgin lovingly looks down at the Christ Child and steadies him on the parapet, as he holds his hand up in blessing.
The identity of the painter remains an enigma. The pose of the Madonna and Child is indebted to the Florentine painter and sculptor Andrea Verrocchio, though the name of the Umbrian artist Luca Signorelli has recently been suggested. Other details, such as the Virgin’s eyes, the marble pillar on the left and the landscape, recall late fifteenth-century Flemish painting.
