Nicola di Maestro Antonio worked in the city of Ancona, in the region of the Marches in central Italy. This finely detailed painting shows Peter, clasping the keys to heaven in a moment of contemplation.
The frame is from the nineteenth-century century, but it seems that the panel’s unusual quatrefoil shape is original. Three other panels of similar format by this artist are known. They probably belonged to the same altarpiece.
