The Christ Child rests on his mother’s mantle, against a straw bundle. Behind him stands the young Saint John the Baptist, his hands clasped in worship. A second saint is squeezed into the composition behind the Virgin. His tonsure, Dominican monastic robes and wounds identify him as the friar Saint Peter Martyr. It is thus likely that this devotional picture was made for a member or supporter of the Dominican order.
