Label Text

Two angels draw back a curtain to reveal the Christ Child with his parents, the Virgin Mary and Joseph. To the right are Saint Elizabeth and her infant son, John the Baptist. John carries a lamb, symbol of the future sacrifice of both children - Christ will be crucified and John beheaded for preaching. Benvenuto Tisi - called Garofalo because he sometimes signed his paintings with a carnation (garofano in Italian) - was a leading painter in the northern Italian city of Ferrara. This work is typical of the delicately painted devotional images in which he specialised.
