as Marthe. The pair met in 1893 and would eventually marry in 1925. Here, she is shown
seated on a sofa, caught in a moment of suspended animation while eating grapes.
Bonnard often returned to personal spaces and sitters to evoke the comfort and quiet of
the domestic setting. His affection for such interior scenes led to his reputation as an
‘intimiste’ painter. The pictures decorating the wall and the desk piled with papers and books
emphasise the informality of the scene.
