This was part of a magnificent set of tableware called the Hannibal Service. Nearly 100 plates and basins from this service are known.

Each piece depicts a story from the life of Hannibal, who led forces from Carthage (now in Tunisia) against the Romans. This bowl was once owned by the Medici Grand Dukes of Florence, amongst the greatest ever collectors of maiolica.

Medici Grand-Ducal collection, Florence; probably sold at auction, Florence, 17-20 May 1797, part of lot 100, bought by the Florentine dealer Campolini; 1st Duke of Buckingham; his sale, Stowe, 15/08 to 7/10, 1848, lot 308; acquired by Peter Norton for Thomas Gambier Parry
