This plate is part of a series of dishes featuring saints. The central figure is possibly a Spanish martyr, Saint Lucretia. She was the namesake of Lucrezia Borgia, the Spanish wife of the ruler of Ferrara in northern Italy.

The Victorian collector Thomas Gambier Parry believed the plate showed Saint Lucia and may have purchased it in remembrance of his daughter Lucy who died several years earlier.
