Label Text

Although dating from the 19th century, this casket incorporates much earlier panels made in Cologne, a centre of goldsmiths’ work and ivory carving in the 12th century. They show 18 seated figures, representing the Apostles, Evangelists and other saints. The lid has Christ enthroned. The panels originally decorated the sides of two portable altars, often used by priests visiting the sick.
