Label Text

This bucket is attributed to the master metalworker Zayn al-Din and is associated with the hammam, or bath house. Its richly inlaid surface suggests it was made for holding wine and could have been used in the hammam’s social spaces. The superb decoration on the underside would have been seen as the bucket was carried from guest to guest.
This bucket has a European form but its decoration is Islamic and of the highest quality. Delicate contrasts of knots, cross-hatchings and curved forms (arabesques) recall pieces made, specially for Venetian patrons, by Zain al-Din, one of the few known Islamic craftsmen of the period. The handle is a later addition.
