Lewis worked briefly at the Omega Workshops, before a public dispute with Fry led him to abandon the Omega and form the rival Rebel Art Centre. Lewis did not share the exuberant and optimistic aesthetic of Bloomsbury, often employing a more sombre palette with tightly worked figures.
