Fry and Bell experimented with throwing under the tuition of George Schenck in his ceramics workshop in Surrey, but only Fry persevered. Instead, Bell preferred to experiment with surface decoration, using a sponge to apply freely the purple glaze to this white vase. This technique was inspired by nineteenth-century English spongeware, where cut sponges were used to create repeat patterns.
