This wine glass was made according to a recipe developed by George Ravenscroft in 1674, which added lead oxide to molten glass, making the glasses more durable than the much-admired but fragile Venetian glasses, whilst also exceeding them in clarity. Complex filigree ornament was a popular addition to the simple shapes of English glass of the late 17th and 18th centuries.
