Label Text

Bomberg was one of the most radical avant-garde painters in London before the First World War. In later years he became deeply immersed in painting the landscapes of Andalusia in Southern Spain. In this view of the dramatic mountain town of Zahara, Bomberg paints the effect of the sun’s searing heat upon the scene in fiery reds and yellows. The forms of the church tower and houses only just maintain their definition amidst the fierce energy of Bomberg’s brushwork.
