Edmond Hédouin (1820-1889) trained as both a painter and a printmaker at the École des Beaux-arts but, although he exhibited paintings steadily over the course of his career, he remains best known as an etcher, making both original and reproductive prints. In 1847 he travelled to Algeria with fellow artist Adolphe Leleux; this trip was the inspiration for the present print, a portrait of a young woman he met on the trip depicted in traditional dress. Although the etching was published much later, by Alfred Cadart in 1875, its relationship to the 1847 trip is made clear by Hédouin’s inscription.
Aischa Bent Tchelabia relates to a drawing by Hédouin in The Courtauld’s collection, A Woman wearing Moroccan costume (D.1978.PG.419). Originally thought to be by Delacroix, this etching confirms Hédouin’s authorship of that drawing.
