Célestin Nanteuil (1813-1873) was a painter, engraver and illustrator with close ties to the Romantic movement. He was in demand both as the creator of original prints as well as a skilled producer of reproductive images of the work of other artists, such as the present print, after a painting by Henri Baron, a frequent collaborator. Scenes from the lives of celebrated artists became a popular subject – and a genre in their own right – in nineteenth-century France, and this appealing anecdotal imagining of an episode from the childhood of Jusepe de Ribera is typical of his work.
