The artist, illustrator and poet Edward Lear (1812-1888) began his artistic career as a teenager as an ornithological illustrator, but lifelong poor health and deteriorating eyesight forced him to abandon this field in favour of landscape. His oeuvre consists primarily of watercolours, prints and oils inspired by his travels around the Mediterranean, usually worked up in the studio from wash drawings made on the spot.
This lithograph is an illustration to Lear’s Illustrated Excursions in Italy (1846), the fruit of a four-year voyage around Italy (1842-46); it depicts a distant view of the town of Rieti in Lazio with the Sabine Mountains in the background.
