This etched portrait of the artist and satirist Honoré Daumier is based on a photograph by Étienne Carjat. Carjat (1828-1906), a contemporary of Nadar, was one of the key photographers working in Paris in 1850s-1870s, best known today for his portraits of artists, writers and political figures. It represents Daumier toward the end of his life and was produced and published two years after the artist’s death.

This impression is a remarque proof with two sketches based on figures in Daumier’s satirical prints contained within the area between the plate mark and the image border. Remarque proofs enjoyed great popularity during the etching revival of the latter half of the nineteenth century and were aimed at, and keenly collected by, connoisseurs in pursuit of particularly rare and unusual impressions.
