Label Text

Linda Karshan considers N.E. 1 one of her first significant etchings. A committed graphic artist from the beginning of her artistic career, Karshan started making prints alongside her drawing practice in the later 1990s. The title refers to North East Minneapolis, where she used a studio between 1995 and 2002, and to what Karshan describes as ‘the directionality of my movements through the plate’. Relying on a disciplined practice based on choreographing her markmaking by counting and pacing her movements, Karshan creates a work of measured yet highly intuitive marks. The etching emerged through the process of its making rather than from a preconceived plan.
