This portfolio of 32 prints was the result of a concentrated period of activity over just a few days and essentially charts Karshan’s exploration of the medium of drypoint. There is a meditative quality to the secession of sheets which move from simple rectangles to more complex gridded forms and back again to compositions of sparse simplicity. There is also a development within the portfolio in terms of Karshan’s growing confidence with her technique and media that registers in the quality of her line, which changes subtlety across the 32 prints (hence the title, Slow Learner). The portfolio is an important statement of Karshan’s artistic approach more broadly, with its emphasis upon process, repeated practice, poise and balance.
