Hirst’s spot paintings, which he first produced in the early 1990s, are among his most famous and important works. In 2005 he returned to the theme for a series of prints, which include Bromphenol Blue. The title is that of a chemical colour marker widely used for the study of DNA. Such associations resonate with the print which creates its overall aesthetic effect from an arrangement of 96 differently coloured ‘cells’.
