Ofili executed Penrhyndeudraeth as part of a larger project that constituted his first series of etchings. Taking copper etching plates to Barcelona, Berlin, New York, and North Wales, Ofili created patterns using repeating shapes inspired by each location in what he called ‘an odd kind of tourism.’ In response to Penrhyndeudraeth, a village in North Wales, Ofili creates a dynamic and lyrical work of repeating diamond forms. In contrast to the large-scale, vibrant paintings
for which Ofili is best known, Penrhyndeudraeth reveals a quieter aspect of the artist’s practice.
