This print is one of a large portfolio of etchings by the Chapman brothers which respond directly to Goya’s famous series of prints of the same name. Goya’s prints depict the brutality and violence of the Napoleonic conflicts with Spain in the early years of the nineteenth century. In this print, a bestial hand is seen working over one of Goya’s most famous scenes of a mutilated man tied to a tree.
The Chapman brothers have had a longstanding fascination with Goya’s work. In 2001, they controversially purchased one of the few remaining original sets of Goya’s Disasters of War and drew horrifying cartoon faces over them, extending the themes of violence and terror to the twenty-first century.
