Ovid’s Metamorphoses recounts how the goddess Latona, mother of Apollo and Diana, turned the peasants of Lycia into frogs as revenge for being prevented from drinking from a local lake. Magdalena de Passe, daughter and pupil of Dutch engraver Crispin de Passe, was one of the few female printmakers of her time. This example of her work was acquired for its connections with the painting below, which was already in the Gallery collection. Its size and detail suggest that the engraving is a direct reproduction, in reverse, of the painting, which is an early copy on copper of a work by Adam Elsheimer. Elsheimer’s works were highly valued and his name appears on the print.
