Miss Cashmore ran the University of Bristol Settlement where Gill went to work in 1925 and 1926. This room is most probably Miss Cashmore’s office at Barton Hill. Multifarious stripes on the walls, ceiling, rug and fireplace, and subtle shades of brown and yellow, with touches of green and blue, reveal Gill’s sensitivity to colour and pattern — a prominent feature of her graphic work at this period.
