This is one of twelve lithographs from Géricault’s so-called ‘English Set’, made on a visit to London and showing scenes of the city’s poor. The directness with which the ragged piper and his dog are portrayed suggests that they were observed from life. Géricault’s subtle treatment of light and the texture of surfaces reveals him as one of the supreme masters of lithography. The print was one of a group of works bequeathed by Tony Halliday (1949-2006), a former student of The Courtauld Institute of Art.
