Between 1780-1836 the Royal Academy occupied the premises at Somerset House which are now home to The Courtauld Gallery. The Academy’s annual exhibition was a competitive arena for the Academicians’ work and one of the highlights of the capital’s artistic and social calendar. Here Sir Joshua Reynolds, founding president of the Academy, is shown accompanying the Prince of Wales.
