This print is almost contemporary with the painting it reproduces, by the popular Flemish artist Brouwer. Such works helped to introduce the new subject of interiors with peasants to a large audience. Typical of Brouwer, the rustic figures behave crudely, with coarse facial features and postures. Such scenes of peasants enthusiastically drinking and smoking were not only meant to entertain urban viewers, but also to instruct. The Latin inscription warns the educated reader of the sin of gluttony associated with smoking and drinking.
