recto: lower centre, pasted on mount: NORTHCOTE. / ARTHUR AND HUBERT. / THE detestable conduct of King John towards his nephew, / Arthur, Duke of Bretagne, has stamped his name with / everlasting infamy, Shakspeare who for dramatic effect has / availed himself of a poet's privilege, and drawn the odious / tyrant less vicious, and less contemptible, than he appears / from historical records, represents Arthur in prison, and about to be deprived of his eyes, when Hubert de Burgh,/ the minister of his uncle's villany, is overcome by the / pathetic entreaties and remonstrances of the unfortunate / prince, and saves him form the cruel sentence [...]
