Notes
This etching by E. Chavane is a copy after William Hogarth's engraving (Paulson 1989 no. 151), designed for use as a ticket. Hogarth's engraving was used as a ticket on three occasions; for the masque of 'Alfred the Great, King of England' at Cliveden House, as a subscription ticket for 'Election Entertainment' and as a subscription ticket for 'Sigismunda'. It shows Cliveden House. This etched plate may be from 'The complete works of William Hogarth in a series of one hundred and fifty steel engravings from the original pictures...' published 1833, a project Chavane was involved with.
