A prolific etcher, Martial specialised in scenes of Paris and produced several illustrated treatises on etching. Some prints were produced in the form of a letter, for which he etched both script and illustration. In this one to a painter friend, Martial describes selected works of art in the Salon of 1865. Trained in the academic vein, he focuses on more traditional painters such as Corot and Ribot, choosing to overlook Manet’s Olympia, the display of which provoked a famous scandal.

Notes

Plate 4 from Lettre illustré sur le salon de 1865.... The painting illustrated is Corot's Souvenir des environs du lac Némy. Looks to represent the painting Souvenir of the Environs of Lake Nemi of 1865 now in the collection of the Art Institute of Chicago.
