A prolific etcher, Martial specialised in scenes of Paris and produced several illustrated treatises on etching. Some prints were produced in the form of a letter, for which he etched both script and illustration. In this one to a painter friend, Martial describes selected works of art in the Salon of 1865. Trained in the academic vein, he focuses on more traditional painters such as Corot and Ribot, choosing to overlook Manet’s Olympia, the display of which provoked a famous scandal.
Notes
