Vallotton was affiliated with the Nabis, an avant-garde group of artists that included Pierre Bonnard. An innovative printmaker, he was noted for his bold woodcuts using simplified black and white shapes and patterns in the Japanese style. For the Paris Intense commission he drew on zinc plates rather than on lithographic stones, since metal was a cheaper material to purchase and print in quantity. Vallotton was adept at portraying crowds with a sense of immediacy. He described this series as “all form, delineation, line and volume”.
Notes
From Paris Intense, a series of seven zincographs published in 1893-94.
