The relatively new process of lithography enabled artists to make a drawing on a stone plate, from which it could be printed. Prout was a keen exponent, producing picturesque views of Britain and the Continent for the popular market. Most admired were architectural street scenes such as this from the largest and most influential of his series. The volume appealed to John Ruskin, a student of Prout, and was the inspiration for his family’s first extended Continental tour.
