Arthur Hughes was an early disciple and friend of the Pre-Raphaelites, whose approach to illustration was essentially literary. The romantic scene appeared in Good Words, a poetry periodical and showcase for contemporary artists. Hughes combines careful observation with an element of poetic idealisation. Fine textures and subtle tonal variations are skilfully rendered by the Dalziel Brothers, the foremost wood engravers of the time.
