Label Text

Wood engravings, cut in relief on the end-grain of boxwood, are ideally suited for printing with type. The hardness of the wood enables fine marks to be made in harmony with text. The demand for wood-engraved illustration was at its height in the 1860s and professional engravers such as the Dalziel Brothers were vital to the growth of the illustrated book and magazine industry. One of only a few Burne-Jones illustrations, this image may be a memorial to his son Christopher who died in infancy the year it was produced.
