This print was made after a drawing by Yon from an oil painting by Millet. Van Gogh was greatly impressed with the wood engravings after Millet’s paintings which he saw in L’Art magazine, mentioning this particular print in a letter to his brother Theo. He first encountered the work of British wood engravers while in London in the 1870s, later acquiring twenty-one volumes of The Graphic. The depictions of rural labourers influenced his own portrayal of people at work.
Notes
The wood engraving is mentioned in the letters of Van Gogh (see Van Gogh letters , letter numbers 141, 157 and 854.
