Label Text

Léonard Gaultier, an engraver and publisher based in Paris, made this intricate engraving as an illustration for a Book of Psalms. Small-scale illustrations for religious texts were a significant part of his output. Engraved plates had to be printed separately from the main text of the book and were time-consuming and expensive to produce. The careful precision of Gaultier’s work gives a sense of the laborious nature of the engraving technique.

Notes

Plate from 'Psalterium Davidis Graecolatinum'. See G.1990.WL.6990 for the title-page to the book.
