The French painter Jacques Stella made only a small number of original etchings. He produced this rare print during a period in Florence. This city forms the setting of the scene, the cathedral just visible in the distance. Stella is better known for his religious subjects and scenes of everyday life such as this one are less typical of his work. The specific subject matter of a man dishing out tripe for cats is unusual.
