Etching allows the artist a freedom of line akin to drawing, making possible the spontaneous effects achieved here. Claude’s experimental approach to the medium is aptly demonstrated by this freely-handled pastoral scene. Lines of varying thicknesses are employed to render different textures and effects. The prominent margin is an unusual feature, suggesting the design was made on the back of another etched plate. The Witt Library collection includes a substantial group of original etchings by Claude.

Notes

The date on the etching has generally been read as 1635, but recent scholarship questions the legibility of the final two digits and argues for a much later date. Stylistically, the etching has much in common with the etchings of the early 1660s, and is also thought to have been made on the back of another plate - possibly Mercury and Argus of 1662.
