Label: WAR. / WHAT Englishman is not conversant with the details of the battle of / Waterloo? Who does not feel himself to have been almost an eye- / witness of the stubborn fighting at Hougoumont? We call to mind / Lord Anglesea's splendid charge with the Royals, Greys, and Ennis- / killeners, and the vain attempt of the French Cuirassiers to withstand them. This / episode of war was almost certainly in the artist's mind when the present picture was / painted; just such a scene might well have occurred. Two dead men, a dead and a / dying horse, lying amidst the smoking ruins of a cottage - how effective in pointing out / the realities of war! Those who lightly talk over the chances of their country's being / shortly engaged with an enemy, and look forward to a war as lending an additional / interest to the daily papers, will do well to have this picture near them. And it will / help all of us to be grateful to the statesmen whose care and forthright have so often / kept England out of the vortex of contintental quarrels. / The original picture was painted in 1846, and was presented to the nation by / R. Vernon, Esq., in 1847. It has been three times engraved: by L. Stocks, R.A. in 1846, by T. L. Atkinson in 1850, and by Zobel in 1871. //
