Inscription: SIR EDWIN LANDSEER. R.A. PINX.T //
Inscription: J. C. ARMYTAGE, SCULP.T //
Inscription: REST. //
Inscription: T.O. /
Stamp: WITT / LIBRARY //
Label: REST. / IT is supposed that the sketch which this engraving reproduces was made / for a picture exhibited in 1830, the "Death of a Stag in Glen Tilt." / Into the picture were introduced portraits of John, fourth Duke of Athole, / of the Hon. George Murray, and of others: it is in the possession of the / present Duke. / This sketch is an excellent example of Landseer's power of imparting life and / vigour to the figures of animals by a few touches. The two dogs on the right are / exceedingly well drawn, but that on the left is rather unfinished. To our artist's / passion for deer-stalking we owe many pleasant pieces; and it is not to be wondered / at that more sketches than one of this important part in the day's programme are / in existance. / The original sketch was in the possession of the late H. W. F. Bolckhow, / Esq.; it has been engraved only by Mr. Armytage. //
